There’s No Such Thing As Genetic Health Problems (Well… Almost.)

By: Boro Petric

I remember people used to blame everything on genes and think that most of the troubles they had with their health were actually genetic health problems.

The truth of the matter is, however, that according to the Human Genome Project (which was completed in 2003), less than one percent of all disease are pure genet
ic disorders.

Less than one percent.

That’s not that many, is it?

I know it sounds unbelievable, but most of all the sickness we suffer from comes from what we eat and how we live.

I mean, go ahead and think about this for a moment.

How do you feel after you eat a cheeseburger at McDonald’s? If you’re like me, you feel literally sick. You have nausea and feel you can eat absolutely nothing the rest of the day.

On the other hand, if you eat healthy, you feel good. You feel energized and ready to take the day in a stride.

That’s just how it is.

See, the toxins we stuff ourselves with cause our body to lose its natural ability to heal. On top of that, if you eat things that harm you, you’ll cause the genes in your body to express defectively. This, obviously, doesn’t mean that there’s something wrong with your genes themselves. They just don’t express right.

Now, here’s the kicker:

If you work on your diet and focus on eating organic, live foods, you’ll be able to fix how your genes get expressed, therefore preventing the genetic disease people are talking about.

So, it’s not about the genes.

Now, although your genes do matter when it comes to your health, note that those types of genetic health problems don’t come from the genes themselves being faulty.

They happen because what you eat will influence how your proteins get created. That will in turn have a huge impact on how your body copes with diseases.

So, don’t listen to them.

People often say that they got sick or they caught a cold. They say that someone must have been sick somewhere, and that’s how they got it.

I want you to think about something for a moment.

Did you notice how doctors and nurses at hospitals rarely get sick? They’re surrounded by dozens of people suffering from serious diseases, but they rarely catch them.

(See? I said it…)

Why?

Because they have procedures they stick to. Those people make sure they’re clean as well as eat well. They also try to exercise regularly (or just do a lot of walking on the job.)

By doing those things, they improve their immune system and, as a result, keep themselves from getting sick.

So, no.

Most of what you suffer from, even the so called genetic health problems are well within your ability to fix. Just like the people surrounded by sickness and disease don’t get sick, you too can influence how the genes in your body get expressed through proper diet and…

…get rid of many genetic health problems very quickly. Try it. You’ll soon realize your genes are just fine. It’s just that all the junk food wouldn’t let them function properly.

Is Your Sunscreen Safe?

During summer most of us will slather our bodies with a sun protection cream and hit the outdoors. Be it sunbathing beside a pool or hanging out on the beach, staying out in the sun is the preferred option during this time.

However, from this summer onwards, we must ensure that we select our sunscreen carefully. Why? According to the experts, conventional sunscreens may c
ause more harm than good, and it is best that we stay away from them.

Shocking as it may be, there is substantial data that suggests the experts are right. Here are six disturbing facts about sunscreens:

1. Contains cancer accelerant

The most disturbing fact that has come to light is: retinyl palmitate (a form of Vitamin A), present in many conventional sunscreens, may accelerate the development of skin cancer when applied to sun-exposed skin.

This revelation was made by a one year animal study conducted by the FDA. The researchers found that lab animals that were dabbed with a Vitamin A-laced sun protection cream developed lesions and skin tumors sooner than animals that were coated in a sunscreen that didn’t contain Vitamin A.

2. Sunscreens may increase the risk of melanoma

There is some evidence which suggests that the incidence of melanoma is higher in sunscreen users. The exact cause of this, however, is not known. Some speculations that have been made so far include:

Sunscreen users usually stay outdoors for long hours, as a result of which they are more prone to UV radiation damage, one of the risk factors for melanoma
Staying out in the sun for long hours causes sunscreen components to break down and release free radicals, which, in turn, causes melanoma
The sunscreen of yesteryears provided poor UVA protection

3. Many spray-on sunscreens contain oxybenzone

Oxybenzone, an organic compound which is often used in sunscreens, is linked to potential cell damage and hormone disruption, according to the Environmental Working Group. This is not the only danger of spray sunscreens, which increases your risk of inhaling potentially-harmful chemicals that can cause irritation in the mouth, lungs, nose, and other harmful side effects.

However, the biggest danger of spray-on sunscreens, it is believed, comes not from its ingredients, but from sprayed vapors that are highly inflammable. Most spray-on sunscreens come with a warning that they shouldn’t be used near an open flame. However, second and third degree cases have been reported where individuals suffered from injuries when they went near an open flame immediately, or a few minutes after applying a spray sunscreen. Inexplicably, most spray blocks do not issue a warning in this regard on their product label.

4. Causes free radical damage

You may be aware that UV radiation generates free radicals that are harmful to us. However, do you know that many ingredients present in common sunscreens also generate free radicals that kill healthy skin cells, damage DNA, speed up skin aging, and cause melanoma and other types of cancers?

Sunscreens, when applied in adequate amounts and reapplied frequently, do more good than harm. However, many people tend to apply less or more sunscreen than recommended and/or reapply it after long gaps. Such people, in turn, are vulnerable to free radical damage due to both UV radiation and the sunscreen they use.

5. Stalls the production of Vitamin D

A thin layer of sunblock prevents the body from producing this important substance. According to an article published in the British Journal of Dermatology, the production of vitamin D is curbed when sunscreen is used for long periods of time.

6. Some sunscreen ingredients may cause endometriosis in women

Endometriosis is a painful condition characterized by irregular bleeding and pain. It occurs when the endometriosis starts growing outside the uterus. The exact cause of endometriosis is not known, but it is believed that estrogen, the female hormone, plays an important role in this regard.

Sunscreens contain UV filters that protect us from harmful UV rays. However, some of these UV filters have an effect similar to estrogen, which, as explained above, is suspected to cause endometriosis.

It is true that the concentration of individual UV filters in sunblocks is low. However, according to a study published in the Toxicology and Applied Pharmacology, these UV filters together have a much greater estrogenic effect than they have alone.

Sunscreens should be your second line of defense against the sun rather than the first

The above statement sums up the mental shift that is required in the way we understand and use sunscreens.

Recent studies show that sunscreens are not as effective in protecting us from the harmful effects of UV as we earlier thought. Nevertheless, they do have a role to play in providing protection from the sun, according to all major public health agencies, which agree that sunscreens should be your second line of defense against the sun- not the first.

Use organic chemical-free sunscreens, but also wear protective clothing, stay in the shade as much as possible, and stay away from the afternoon sun. We sum up this article with a few tips to help you choose a safe and effective sunscreen:

Look for sunscreens that have one or more of the following ingredients – titanium dioxide, zinc oxide, avobenzone (3%), or Mexoryl SX
Avoid sunscreens that have Oxybenzone and/or Vitamin A
Select lotions and stay away from sprays
Use a water-resistant sunblock for the pool or beach

Truth About Chemotherapy

Cancer is society’s biggest enemy – more than 7 million people die prematurely due to cancer every year. Recently, researchers stumbled upon a chance discovery that challenges the wisdom of using chemotherapy, which, so far, is considered to be the most effective cancer treatment.

Chemotherapy fuels tumor growth

Researchers made this unexpected discovery while trying to
find answers to why cancerous cells are so difficult to kill inside a human body when the same cells can be killed easily in the lab. While studying the effect of chemotherapy, a standard cancer treatment, on tissue obtained from prostate cancer patients, scientists found evidence of DNA damage in non-cancerous cells after chemotherapy. These findings, published in the medical journal National Medicine, raises serious concerns about the efficacy of chemotherapy.

Chemotherapy, as you may know, works by killing cancerous cells. However, chemotherapy drugs cannot differentiate between healthy cells and cancer cells, and attack both with the same vigor. Scientists have found that non-cancerous cells that were damaged by chemo drugs release a certain protein, WNT 16B, in high quantities. WNT 16B secreted by healthy cells damaged by chemo drugs interact with nearby cancer cells, increasing their survival rate and, more disturbingly, making them more resilient to other treatments.

DNA mutations caused by chemo drugs may be passed to future generations

Studies show that chemotherapy drugs can cause DNA mutations. Scientists suspect that these DNA mutations may be passed to a patient’s future generations as well. In other words, chemotherapy drugs may negatively affect a patient’s entire hereditary line.

Animal studies suggest that cancer drugs make cancer cells metastasize

Researchers at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Centre, Boston, studied the effect of cancer drugs and found that they caused cancer cells to metastasize aggressively.

In their findings, scientists noted that cancer drugs, sunitinib and imatanib, caused cancer cells to metastasize. Sunitinib (brand name Sutent) is used for the treatment of gastrointestinal tumors, while imatanib (brand name Gleevec) is used for treating gastrointestinal stromal tumors and chronic myelogenous leukemia. The size of the tumor may initially reduce when these drugs are administered. However, these drugs make cancer cells metastasize aggressively over time.

These cancer drugs, as well as many other cancer drugs, work on the principle of anti-angiogenesis, a process that inhibits the growth of new blood cells. When scientists stimulated anti-angiogenesis in mice, they found that although the size of the tumor first decreased, it increased afterward by as much as 300%. The findings of this study were published in the January issue of Cancer Cell.

Natural substances are effective in controlling/preventing cancer

Natural alternatives, such as turmeric, have shown promise in controlling and preventing cancer.

While reviewing 11 studies, experts concluded that turmeric can reduce the size of brain tumors by as much as 81%. Additional studies have also confirmed that it is a potent anti-cancer agent, and can even stop tumors from growing completely.

Vitamin D is another effective anti-cancer nutrient. It is believed to be better at fighting cancer than many conventional cancer drugs. The optimal range of Vitamin D for cancer patients is higher than that for healthy individuals. That is why cancer patients are recommended to undergo a special blood test called 25(OH)D, before using Vitamin D for its anti-cancer capabilities. The optimal range of Vitamin D in healthy individuals is 50-70 ng/ml, while the range for treating cancer is 70-100 ng/ml.

Other natural substances, besides ginger and Vitamin D, are also effective in preventing cancer. Early animal studies show that other natural substances, such as saffron, are also effective in controlling cancer. Let’s take a look at some of these natural anti-cancer agents:

Saffron – Scientists studied the effect of saffron in rats that had liver cancer and found that it slowed the spread of cancer cells and killed them. The findings of this study were published in Hepatology.
Selenium – An antioxidant mineral, Selenium is believed to reduce the risk of bladder cancer.
Whole Ginger Extract – According to an article published in the British Journal of Nutrition, whole ginger extract has shown promise in the treatment of prostate cancer. To get the therapeutic effect of ginger compounds, prostate cancer patients should consume 3.5 ounces of this substance daily.

Is it time we look beyond chemotherapy?

Maybe yes. More studies should be performed to better understand the role of natural substances in cancer treatment.

Recent studies show that cancer drugs are not only ineffective in treating cancer, but that they cause the tumor to metastasize aggressively, and, thus, decrease the lifespan of cancer patients. Also chemotherapy is astronomically expensive, leaving many patients or their families financially ruined while the drug companies continue to profit. That’s why prevention should be a main priority and natural substances such as turmeric should be considered in treating cancer and do not cause any harmful side effects.

Do your research before you commit to being poisoned with chemotherapy.

10 Worst Packaged Food Lies You Must Know About

The wonders of technology and industry have surely made our lives much better than what our earlier generations had! From food to music and health to entertainment, everything is almost available on a platter!

How easy is it to just grab a pack of pre-cooked, processed and pre-packed food from the shelf of your local supermarket? Yes, it is very co
nvenient but how much nutrition is actually in those types of food. Let’s look deeper and explore top 10 packaged food lies. Be aware and don’t fall for the bait and switch!

The Top 10 Catchwords – Watch Out!

Read on as we reveal what lies beneath those blatant claims packaged foods make and give you an insight into the 10 most glaring lies therein.

1. 0 Trans fat

Heard this too often? Must be, since authorities at the FDA allow foods to be labeled as 0 trans fat per serving if each serving carries below a half gram of fat per serving. Though the number might sound too miniscule to you, yet experts warn you against getting any more than 1% of your calories from trans fats. Watch out for the term ‘partially hydrogenated oil’ in the ingredients which really is a signal that the product is not trans fat free at all.

2. Fruit-’flavored’

Think twice if your product says pineapple-favored and you thought it is pineapple you are getting! What you are getting is an artificial favor of the fruit in all probability.

3. Sugar-free

Now that’s a bait that most of us fall to. Foods without added sugar might actually have long lists of artificial sweeteners. In fact, there is concrete scientific evidence to show that artificial sweeteners can actually trick your body into craving more for sweet foods.

Check out the podcast with Shawn Stevenson on this specific topic.

4. Natural

So when does U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) allow a manufacturer to say ‘Natural’ on its food label for meat products? That’s when a product is said to have no artificial ingredient or added color and has been subjected to minimum processing. As for vegetables, fruits and processed foods, the FDA is still to have a concrete definition. So, even if your can has GMOs and artificial sweeteners added, the label can still say ‘natural‘.

5. Made with whole grains

Now, whole grains are good for you, no doubt! However, the problem comes in when these whole grains just form a very miniscule portion of the total ingredients. In most of the cases, such products will have whole grains in very small content and white flour, incidentally called enriched wheat flour as its key ingredient. Ideally, it is the whole grains which should be the first item on the list and not the other way around.

6. Packed with antioxidants

An easy word to catch the attention of the health-conscious, this term can lull you into a false belief that your product carries the wonderful qualities of antioxidants, the nutrient-packed enzymes which have excellent anti-aging anti-cancer benefits. However, the problem lies in the fact that there is no formal criterion for this definition. So even if your cereal was packed with an antioxidant carrying fruit juice, it will not offer you even half of the benefits as a whole fruit or vegetable will.

7. No added hormones

This one is specifically relevant to meat and animal products. If your product makes this claim, in all probability it means that the poultry or pork have not been fed with hormones, but antibiotics to increase the feed efficiency of the species. So what is the issue here? Since USDA prohibits the use of growth hormones, antibiotics, with an equally damaging impact are used, tricking you into believing in the safety of the product.

8. Gluten free

Perhaps the latest phenomenon to catch the fancy of the food industry, this term has almost become a cash-churning phrase. If you suffer from gluten intolerance, you need to watch out! While these products might be free of wheat gluten, yet these will mostly carry rye or barley gluten, which are equally problematic.

9. Multi-grain

Surprisingly enough, the FDA doesn’t lay down specific criterion for the type of whole grains version to be used for a product to be labeled as multi-grain. In all likelihood, the said product will just carry various versions of refined, unhealthy grains and not a healthy mix of whole grains, as expected.

10. BPA free

So what is BPA? Well, BPA or Bisphenol A is an organic compound that the health experts are continuously warning you against. When you use plastic food containers containing BPA, a toxic chemical which has been associated with heart disease, cancer and reproductive problems gets leached into your food products. Stating that the product is BPA free will essentially not mean that the plastic container is safe. In fact, a study reported by the Environmental Health Perspectives reveals that all the plastic containers, regardless of their labels surely leach potent, damaging chemicals into your food items.

Beets for Cardiovascular Health

Cardiovascular related illness is the #1 killer in the industrialized world due to unbalanced lifestyle factors, nutrient-deficient diets, lack of exercise, and stress. We’ll call these the Fatal Four. Addressing all sides of the Fatal Four statistically brings vast benefits and reversal of symptoms to many heart disease sufferers.

According to new research, there’s one thing you can add to the diet department that can change your state of health almost immediately. Researchers at The London School of Medicine have discovered that drinking just 500 ml of beet juice a day can significantly reduce blood pressure.

In fact, they were able to isolate the specific compound in the beets responsible for this improvement.

Beets contain interesting phytochemicals known nitrates. These nitrates found in the beetroot juice interact with your saliva and bacteria on your tongue which convert them into nitrites. When swallowed, these nitrites are converted into nitric oxide in your gastrointestinal tract or re-enter your circulation as nitrite.

This amazing process, via the human body interacting with the beet nutrients, creates a sort of time-release blood pressure reducing effect. Healthy test subjects were found to have blood pressure reduction within just one hour, but the greatest decrease was seen 3 to 4 hours later.

Another study published in the Journal of Applied Physiology showed that drinking beetroot juice boosts stamina and can help you exercise up to 16% longer.

The foundational aspects of exercise are all about the cardiovascular and muscular systems. The dietary nitrates in beets have 2 distinct physiological effects.

It widens blood vessels, which reduces blood pressure and allows blood to flow more freely.
It directly impacts muscle tissue, reducing the amount of oxygen your muscles need to perform activities.

This is powerful information to have in your hands. Whether you’re looking for an athletic advantage, wanting to reduce your heart disease risk, or you simply want to provide your body with optimal nutrition, beet juice has some remarkable benefits.

WARNING: If you’re drinking beetroot juice by itself, you may actually lower your blood pressure too much if you’re not adjusted to it. It’s a wonderful idea to add some celery, beet greens (they come with it!), or other alkaline produce with it to give it some balance. Or, you can simply take time and build up on your straight beet juice intake, pay attention to how you feel, and enjoy the health benefits that come along with this wonderful root veggie.

One more thing to take note of is the Doctrine of Signatures which states that every food in nature can teach you what it’s beneficial for based on the way it looks, smells, tastes, and/ or how it functions in nature. There is no other food that has such a startling resemblance to our blood than beet juice. And it begs you to ask yourself the question: “Is this just an accident?”

Well, based to our modern scientific research, it’s proving over-and-over again what our great health teachers of the past have known all along.

Now go make some beet juice!

Chakra Balancing Foods

Chakra, the effervescent Sanskrit term that implies the ‘spinning wheel of energy’ tells you all about the powerful centers of spiritual energy in your body. Seven in all, each of these chakras are located at one of the major endocrine glands and are associated with a different body part.

For our body to function properly, each of these 7 chakras needs to work in perfect alignment, in their natural balance. However, it is our dietary intake that determines how well-aligned our chakras remain. When we deprive ourselves of a food group that feeds a particular chakra, it goes into a misalignment and leads to a spate of illnesses and health complications. Similarly, having a particular food group in excess will also push the specific chakra out of its original balance.

In the sections that follow, we’ll give you a detailed outline of the major chakra balancing foods and how to eat well to enhance the overall quality of your life.

FEED YOUR CHAKRAS

Starting from your lower body, these 7 chakras go right up to your brain, with each carrying its own significance.

Read on for a detailed description of each of these, the role they play in ensuring the level of physical and mental health you have and most importantly, the right food to feed your chakras.

1. Root chakra (color – red): Located at the base of your spine, it controls your physical vitality and survival instincts. The root chakra is said to facilitate movement within your body and dysfunction of this point can cause sciatica, lower back pain, depression, immune disorders and even rectal tumors.

Have more of proteins, root vegetables, minerals and above all, red-colored foods to feed your root chakra. Some examples are:

Potatoes
Beets
Carrots
Eggs
Red meat
Hot paprika
Horseradish

2. Sacral chakra (color – orange): Located below the navel and representing your creativity, sexuality and self esteem, the sacral chakra dysfunction will present itself in the form of issues like sciatica, gynecological and libido problems or urinary complications. Include the following sweet fruits, nuts and spices in your diet to feed your sacral chakra:

Strawberries
Mangos
Melons
Seeds
Nuts
Oranges
Coconut
Honey
Cinnamon
Sesame seeds

3. Solar Plexus Chakra (color – yellow): Located above your navel, it is the prime controlling point of your emotional life. Consume foods such as grains, spices, dairy products as well as any yellow fruits and vegetable to feed this chakra. A few examples are:

Yellow bell pepper
Cheese
Yogurt
Mints
Ginger
Rice
Flax seed
Sunflower seeds
Lemon
Spearmint
Turmeric
Cumin
Fennel

4. Heart chakra (color – green): Located in the heart, it is where your soul resides, controlling your emotions of tolerance, empathy and forgiveness. A dysfunction can lead to problems such as asthma, lung or breast cancer, heart problems, pneumonia and shoulder problems.

Some of the most helpful heart chakra foods include:

Spinach
Kale
Broccoli
Cabbage
Cauliflower
Squash
Cilantro
Parsley

5. Throat chakra (color – turquoise): Located near the thyroid gland in the throat, it controls your powers of expression, communication and judgment and can cause problems like a sore throat, swollen glands, mouth ulcers, voice problems and laryngitis if it dysfunctions. Consume the following food groups to keep the essential functions of the throat chakra intact:

Soups
Sauces
Juices
Seaweed and nori
Fruits

6. Third eye chakra (color – indigo): Located in the centre of the brain, the ‘third eye’ manages your spiritual direction and wisdom. It has ailments like blindness, strokes, seizures and brain tumors as its most critical dysfunctions. You can have more of dark bluish colored fruits, liquids and fluids to feed your brow chakra, including the likes of:

Red grapes
Blueberries
Black berries
Raspberries
Grape juice
Red wine
Poppy seed
Lavender
Mugwort

7. Crown chakra (color – purple): The message of the crown chakra is purification and releasing the physical body from debris so that there is a better connection between body and soul. It is located at the crown of the head and balancing the inner and outer personality, it is considered as our direct link to God and can have depression, muscular problems and complications of the skeletal system as the major signs of its dysfunctions. Owing to its correlation with the universe and God, no particular food for crown chakra is advised. However, steps and techniques like fasting, detoxing and herbal incense are suggested for the purpose of feeding your crown chakra.

Conclusion

The 7 chakras of the human body govern the circulation of energy and the related physical as well mental wellness within the entire system. You need to consume different kinds of food groups to feed your specific chakras. This can help in restoration of the original functions of these chakras and in turn cure any associated ailments. Now that you are aware of the importance of chakra balancing foods, make sure to add them to your diet.

Dried Plums Help Build Strong Bones

Next time you pass a package of prunes, think strong skeleton, not just constipation fixer. Then grab them with your finger bones and toss them in your cart. Snacking on a few of these little nuggets dai
ly could help keep your bones sturdy and shatter-proof.

Why? Prunes (also known as dried plums) are filled with compounds called polyphenols that rebalance your bone-building cycle.

Think of your bones as a never-ending highway construction project. Microscopic segments are constantly being demolished and rebuilt by special crews. Over time, the rebuilding teams slack off, but the demolition crews keep working hard. Result: weaker bones as you age and more danger of breaks. Dried plums slow down the demolition, which lets the rebuilders catch up. That helps your bones.

Investigators at Florida State University suggest a dietary preventive strategy for osteoporosis. They conducted a year-long study in which 100 postmenopausal women were randomly assigned to eat 100 grams of dried fruit daily – either dried plums or dried apples. Those who consumed prunes had denser bones in the forearm and the spine at the end of the study. Compounds in dried plums alter the way bones are remodeled. They are less likely to break down in the presence of these nutrients and in animal studies they have been shown to reverse bone loss.

The group’s research, has been published in the British Journal of Nutrition.

In the United States about 8 million women have osteoporosis because of the sudden cessation of ovarian hormone production at the onset of menopause. About 2 million men also have osteoporosis.

‘In the first five to seven post-menopausal years, women are at risk of losing bone at a rate of three to five percent per year,’ said Mr Arjmandi, Florida State professor and chairman of the U.S. Department of Nutrition, Food and Exercise Sciences.

‘However, osteoporosis is not exclusive to women and, indeed, around the age of 65, men start losing bone with the same rapidity as women.’

Arjmandi encourages people who are interested in maintaining or improving their bone health to take note of the extraordinarily positive effect that dried plums have on bone density.

‘Don’t wait until you get a fracture or you are diagnosed with osteoporosis and have to have prescribed medicine,’ he said.

‘Do something meaningful and practical beforehand. People could start eating two to three dried plums per day and increase gradually to perhaps six to 10 per day. Prunes can be eaten in all forms and can be included in a variety of recipes.’

Caution: don’t overdo prunes. They may be full of polyphenols and fiber, but, like all dried fruit, they’re high in sugar . . . not to mention they can quickly turn constipation into diarrhea! So add three to five prunes a day to your regular strong-bones roster.

Digestive Enzymes

Digestive enzymes aid digestion and break down polymeric macromolecules into their smaller building blocks, which can be easily absorbed by our body. These enzymes are present throughout our digestive system-in the mouth, stomach, and the pancreas. Our body produces around 22 essential enzymes that initiate chemical reactions in the body, which helps in correctly breaking down and processing the food we eat.

It is estimated that the human body needs 45 essential nutrients to carry out normal functions. The body doesn’t produce them and depends on external sources for these vital nutrients. Most of these are present in the foods we eat, but in complex forms. The digestive enzymes present in the body help break down the food and supply our body with these essential nutrients.

Many important enzymes are present in raw foods and boost the process of digestion, which reduces the body’s need to secrete digestive enzymes. However, these enzymes are destroyed when we cook food at high temperatures. It is thus advisable to have a mix of cooked and raw foods to aid digestion. You also need to ensure that you drink a lot of water and fluids to strengthen digestion.

How Are Digestive Enzymes Secreted?

There are a lot of factors that trigger the release of digestive enzymes in our body. The sight, sound, smell, and even the thought of food can stimulate the secretion of enzymes in the stomach, mouth, and other parts of the body. As soon as food enters our mouth, the enzymes get into action, breaking them down into simpler building blocks. Some of the food molecules are broken down in the mouth itself due to the presence of enzymes in the saliva, while others are broken down in the stomach and intestines.

Types of Digestive Enzymes

Protease – Protease is one of the most important enzymes in our body secreted by the glands in the stomach and pancreas. It breaks down proteins into amino acids called peptides. Protease is important, as undigested protein can wind up in our circulatory system and lead to a lot of health complications.

Amylase – This enzyme is secreted by the salivary and pancreatic glands. It stimulates a specific chemical reaction which helps break down carbohydrates and provides instant energy to the human body. It also acts as a catalyst in the hydrolysis of complex carbohydrates into maltose and glucose. Amylase also aids the growth of oral bacteria that convert starch into sugar. Additionally, it helps the body overcome different allergies and skin interactions occurring due to insect bites.

Lipase – Lipase is responsible for digesting fats in the food you ear. This enzyme is found in the mouth and the stomach and breaks the fat molecules into glycerol and fatty acids which is absorbed by the body. It plays a vital role in removing the excess fatty deposits from the inside of your veins and arteries and allows smooth flow of blood throughout your body.

Cellulase – Cellulase breaks down fiber and is also an excellent antioxidant which eliminates toxins and heavy metals from the body. It breaks down the soluble fiber we consume, while the insoluble fiber is retained in order to boost bowl movement and keep the intestinal tract inflated.

Nuclease - This group of digestive enzymes is secreted by the pancreas and helps in separating the bonds between the nucleotides in nucleic acids. It was earlier referred to as polynucleotidase and nucleodepolymerase. Nuclease breaks down the nucleic acid to release nitrogen bases and simple sugars.

Maltase - Maltase is an important enzyme which breaks down disaccharide maltose. It catalyzes the hydrolysis of disaccharide maltose to simple sugar glucose, which is used up by the body or stored in the liver as glycogen. Maltase is synthesized by the cells of the mucous membrane which lines the intestinal wall.

Lactase – As the name suggests, this enzyme helps in the breakdown of lactose (milk sugar) into the simple sugars glucose and galactose. Lactase is found in the small intestine, liver, and kidney of all mammals and is produced by the mucous membrane cells that line the intestinal wall. It also carries out glucosidase and glycosylceramidase activities.

Mycozyme - This is a single-celled plant enzyme which aids the digestion of starch. Mycozyme is important since the breaking down of starch molecules is difficult as compared to the other food molecules we eat. It breaks down starch molecules into simple sugars that are easily absorbed by the body in order to release energy.

The Need for Enzyme Supplements

All the essential digestive enzymes are secreted by our body, but as we age, enzyme secretion slows down naturally and declines. Once a person crosses the age of 40, this decline adversely effects the digestion and assimilation of food. This explains why digestive problems are common in the elderly, who often find it difficult obtain essential nutrients from the foods they eat.

The common signs of a slowdown in enzyme secretion are heartburn, gas, constipation, bloating, allergies, ulcers, lack of energy, and reduced immunity. The decline in the secretion of enzymes may vary from person to person depending on his or her general state of health and other physical ailments that may be present.

The intake of enzyme supplements that aid digestion becomes necessary as we grow older. Even as a young adult, you may face difficulties when it comes to digesting some foods due to the inadequate secretion of a particular enzyme in your body. Such deficiencies are common in people of all age groups. In such a situation, you need to consult a doctor or dietician immediately. Keep in mind that if your body can digest food well and absorb all the essential nutrients, you will stand a better chance of living a long and healthy life.

Health Is #1

"When health is absent, wisdom cannot reveal itself, art cannot manifest, strength cannot fight, wealth becomes useless, and intelligence cannot be applied." ~Herophilus

Quote Of The Day

"Within each of us lies the power of our consent to health and sickness, to riches and poverty, to freedom and to slavery. It is we who control these, and not another." ~ Richard Bach (Illusions)

Quote Of The Day

You see things; and you say 'Why?' But I dream things that never were; and I say 'Why not?' ~ George Bernard Shaw

Seasons ~ Virginia Cook

Winter,
Its harsh winds, And cold nights, Teardrops freeze Into icy crystals As they fall helplessly And shatter As they hit the cold, hard ground.

Spring,
The warm breeze, And softened earth, Out of the darkness And into the light I see the sun Once more And can feel its heat again.

Summer,
The long, hot days, And endless nights, The humidity in the air Makes it impossible To breathe And I struggle To stay in focus.

Fall,
The changing colors, And cool winds that blow, It seems as though This endless cycle Is beginning again And there can be no stopping The changing of the seasons.

Kale – Best Vegan Source of Iron

Packed with antioxidants, vitamins, fiber and anti-inflammatory nutrients; kale is known to be the king of cruciferous vegetables. This vibrant, verdant green member of the cabbage family can be steamed, fried, sautéed, blended to make smoothies and soups or simply sprinkled like confetti over food. Moreover, kale contains more iron per calorie than red meat. This means vegetarians or those having plant-based diets, need not worry about iron deficiencies. These are just some of the reasons why kale is called the ‘beef’ of a plant-based diet.

Why kale and not meat?

In recent times, not only have meat processing procedures been questioned but so has the sustainability of the entire meat producing industry. Thus, as a society, we must look at other options. Kale takes mere 2 months to grow in addition to being nutritious, whereas, cattle farming takes up a lot of vital environmental resources – that are both scarce and could be put to better use – such as water and land.

Nutritiously, Kale is the better option when compared to beef. As stated above, it not only contains as much iron as beef, it has other tremendous winning qualities too. Kale is brimming with anti-cancer nutrients such as glucosinolates, in addition to having anti-inflammatory properties. Therefore, while consuming beef can cause heart diseases, increased cholesterol and autoimmune diseases, kale actually does the opposite – it provides the body with nutrients that actually defend against and even reverse such diseases.

Most Americans consume more meat than greens and thus end up with insufficient fiber in their diets, which causes diseases such as digestive disorders and heart disease. One cup of kale provides 5 grams of fiber which is 5% of the recommended daily intake.

Antioxidants are known to prevent diseases such as cancer. Kale is an especially vital source of antioxidants. It is, in fact, the number one vegetable that contains the most carotenoids, beta-carotene, lutein and zeaxanthin, all nutrients which have become such a critical natural health marvel that the USDA has invested huge sums of money trying to fund a project that is researching on exactly how much Kale contributes to human health.

In addition to fiber, antioxidants and iron; kale provides equal (if not more) amount of calcium and omega3 fatty acids than meat products. A cup of kale provides 15% of the daily requirement of calcium which is even more calcium per calorie than – you guessed it – milk! Thus, during an era when calcium deficiency related ailments such as arthritis and osteoporosis are becoming commonplace, we must endeavor to include more calcium-rich foods such as kale in our diets, whether we are vegetarian or not. Moreover, with significant percentages of omega3 fatty acids, which one traditionally associates only with meat and fish products, kale is definitely the healthier option when compared to meat.

So how can you add kale to your diet?

This nutritious yet inconspicuous member of the cabbage family can be stored and cooked in several different ways. Always wash kale well and shake to dry. It freezes well and can be thawed and used as if one were using raw kale. However, it is a good idea to chop it finely before freezing. It can be refrigerated for 3-4 days in a plastic bag or an airtight container in the crisper of your fridge though if stored for longer, it can get bitter.

There are numerous recipes one can follow in order to prepare kale, but in a nutshell, kale can be fried to make chips, steamed Рin which case, it provides the maximum amount of nutrients, saut̩ed with other veggies for stir fries, blended with yogurt to make smoothies, mixed into soups, blanched for eating on its own or simply raw in a salad. Due to its curly leaves and vibrant color, kale can also be chopped up finely to make confetti for garnishes. The dinosaur Kale variety is a particular favorite in case you have never tried kale before.

So, the next time, you are tempted to opt for its meat counterpart beef, give kale a chance. Full of vitamins – get this, it has 200% per cup of the RDI for vitamin A and 130% of vitamin C – not to mention anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer and antioxidant nutrients, kale is inarguably the better option. You will not only be eating healthier, but you will also be helping the environment by eating this member of vegetable royalty. Kale is indeed the new beef.

Garlic – Natural Antibiotic and Food Poisoning Remedy

Garlic is one of those flavors that people either love or hate. Those who do tend toward the latter – mostly for reasons to do with the after-taste of the bulb that gives you bad breath! But, after you read about all its benefits, you might start using garlic for good health and not for taste.

Garlic – A Natural Antibiotic!

Antibiotics have
always been a big No-No in my household – my mother believes that the body will heal itself without any external aid. Though we tease her about her blatant refusal to pop pills [till one of us is so sick that it's either "pop pills" or just "pop"], I find that her belief has been passed on to me!

Uncontrollable drowsiness, invariably upset stomach, nausea and high probability of fungal infections are all immediate side effects that people using antibiotics must face. Personally, I don’t think it’s worth the trouble of going on a course of these if the illness isn’t major, and if there is a simpler alternative to consider.

Garlic has been used for its medicinal properties for thousands of years. The likes of Hippocrates, Galen, Pliny the Elder and Dioscorides are said to have spoken of garlic’s beneficial properties in getting rid of parasites, respiratory problems, poor digestion, and low energy.

More recently, in-vitro research shows that garlic can be used as an anti-bacterial, anti-viral, and anti-fungal! Curious about what makes this bulb so brilliant? ‘Allicin’ is the answer. Allicin is what is produced when a clove of garlic is crushed – it’s a natural antibiotic and an anti-fungal.

It is important to remember that its effectiveness begins to deteriorate as soon as crushed, and that if cooked, garlic has nearly no medicinal value. This means that it’s best consumed raw. Some of you might cringe right now, but at the end of the day, it is much healthier and simpler than medication. Not to mention, cheaper and more useful – it has a number of other positive effects.

Taking one clove of garlic is very good for keeping cold and cough at bay.

Garlic has been proven to be very good for our cardiovascular system. It makes the arteries elastic, making them less prone to hardening.

Garlic has anti-bacterial and anti-viral properties so it helps in fighting off infections.

Garlic has antioxidant properties and can slow down the aging process and ward off certain types of cancers.

Garlic has anti-inflammatory properties that can help ease symptoms of arthritis, rheumatism and gout.

Garlic – A “Tried & Tested” Solution For Many Problems

Garlic has been used as an antiseptic since before World War I and as a remedy for scurvy since 1924. It helps reduce cholesterol levels, as found through a clinical trial by the National Institute of Health [NHI] in the USA, [published in the Archives of International Medicine, 2007]. Czech studies show that garlic has cardiovascular benefits. It is said that it can help control blood sugar levels and help in preventing certain complications of diabetes mellitus. Research shows that garlic even helps in the prevention of certain types of cancer.

Perhaps, in the end, bad-breath is a small price to pay for the never-ending list of great effects garlic can have on your health. After all, it can easily be fixed – brush your teeth [always a good thing!].

Fight Food Poisoning Bugs Quickly With Garlic

According to research published in the Journal of Antimicrobial Chemotherapy, it has been found that one of the garlic ingredients “diallyl sulphide is more effective than 100 times bigger doses of the antibiotics erythromycin and ciprofloxacin. And, it is also able to work in a fraction of the time taken by the drugs.

Raw garlic is known to be an effective solution for common food poisoning bacteria. In fact, garlic is known to be used for treating many different health conditions including stomach upsets, skin problems and infertility.

Try Garlic – It’s Good!

Unlike experimenting with other types of medicine, trying garlic won’t have any complications. And, when it seems like there’s nothing to lose, and maybe an easier way to stay healthy, try not to shy away from sampling the many benefits that this wonder bulb has to offer!

8 Signs That Your Liver Could Be Sick

The liver is one of the most important organs in the body. As the largest internal organ, it is no surprise that the liver plays many vital roles in the operation and maintenance of a healthy body. The liver acts as the primary filtration organ in the body as well as producing a number of vital hormones, secretions, and blood components, which makes maintaining a healthy liver a top priority for anyone concerned about overall health.

A healthy liver is essential for digesting food, absorbing nutrients, getting rid of toxic substances and regulating a number of other vital processes. As a result, when your liver is not functioning at optimal levels, your entire body and overall health suffer.

Common signs that your liver might be sick are:

Yellowish tone to your skin and/or eyes
Abdominal pain and swelling
Itchy skin that doesn’t seem to go away
Dark urine
Pale or bloody/ tar-colored stools
Chronic fatigue
Nausea
Loss of appetite

However, it has been reported that at least half of people show no signs or symptoms until their livers are seriously damaged. Therefore, it is important to check the health of your liver using a panel of simple blood tests, including checking your levels of bilirubin, slkaline phosphatase (ALP), aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT) and gamma glutamyl transpeptidase (GGT).

If any of these tests come back abnormal or even outside the optimal range, there are a number of things you can do to boost the health of your liver, including:

Reducing your alcohol consumption and increasing the amount of water you drink
Using prescription and nonprescription drugs ONLY when you REALLY need them and just taking the recommended dose
Eating plenty of fiber
Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight
Taking liver-boosting and -detoxifying supplements such as milk thistle, dandelion, probiotics, green tea, vitamin E and curcumin.

You can get more information from the Blood Test Results Decoded program about liver function tests and other blood panels that can be used to help diagnosis potentially serious liver conditions, as well as improve your liver health.

Why Are We Eating So Much More Than We Used To?

(BeWellBuzz) Appetites have soared and waistlines have expanded. An up close look at the statistics reveals the stark truth – an average American today is on an incorrigible binging spree!

According to the survey conducted by American insurance companies, between 1890′s and mid 1970′s the weight of the average man and woman remained constant. The study declared the status quo as a 25 pound increase in the weight of the average man or woman. Over 40 years ago people still ate the sinfully sweetened, high calorie food that they do today. While the health and wellness market earlier was not as rampant with diet books and fitness clubs as it is today, people were leaner and fitter than today.

The most obvious reason that comes to mind for the startling increase in weight is – eating more than we used to. According to researchers at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill calorie intake has increased by 570 calories between 1977 and 2006. The number of daily meals consumed by U.S adults rose to 4.8 in 2006 from 3.8 in 1977.

Why has the appetite curve risen so dramatically?

The drastic change that comes to light is the increase in omega-6 in our diets. All fried, baked, processed food is prepared in vegetable oil. The vegetable oil made of corn and soya beans is high on omega-6 and has been found to interfere in our getting the omega-3.

According to expert Will Lassek, there has been a threefold increase in the consumption of processed vegetable oils made from corn and soya bean. The meat production is being increased by feeding corns and soya bean to the cattle, pigs and poultry. Omega-6 consumption has increased due to the misconception that it reduces the risk of heart attack but instead has been found to lead to a voracious appetite.

Is it just the appetite then?

Well, there is more to it than meets the eye!

According to the researcher Brian Wansink, the Americans have got into the vicious circle of ‘mindless eating’. Prof Wansink states that mindless eating occurs when we allow social situations, emotions, attractive packaging, or labels to distract us. People are unconsciously influenced by their environment about when to eat and how much to eat. In a study published in Plos researchers have found when people share a meal together, they tend to eat as much or as little as their dining companion. This combined with an increased rate of dining out is spreading the uncontrolled gluttony like an epidemic.

Why makes us eat so much?

According to a research by Sullivan, over the past years, the number of dining restaurants especially in North America has proliferated. An average person dines out 3 times more than one used to a few years ago. The survey by National research association reveals that consumers are dining out not only on special occasions but as an integral part of their lifestyle.

The hectic lifestyles, ready availability of fast foods and decline in regular mealtimes are some of the main reasons of more frequent meals during the day. There has been an increase not only in portions but also the snacking occasions. People are mindlessly eating second breakfasts the underlying belief being that to eat several times a day is healthy. David Lavitsy, Professor of nutrition and psychology from Cornwall University says that people end up consuming more calories when they switch to smaller meals.

Besides the frequency of eating, the consumption of relatively bigger portions has increased much more than a few years ago. The size of the average dinnerware has increased by 11% contributing to heap portions of food that match the plate size.

The bait that lures one into overeating is easy access to convenient, cheap and tasty food. The food companies and restaurants are playing with the consumer psyche by using fancy words to describe the menu than just a simple statement of ingredients. For example, double beef prosperity burger sounds more enticing than just a beef burger. The consumer is led into thinking that it is a superior quality in irrespective of the taste.

Multi-tasking in today’s hectic and chaotic lifestyle makes it difficult to sense fullness of the stomach, and you are likely to indulge more. Multitasking and eating (like a rushed breakfast) during the morning commute, binging while watching TV or a quick bite snacks at work are the sure shot ways of overindulgence.

These facts and figures are a warning to curb on the rise binging spree before it’s too late.

Now is the time to put deliberate efforts into mindful eating and consciously choosing when, what and how much you eat.

To be happy in your job and in life, focus on the NOW

By Andrea Kay, USA Today

You don't have to save people from burning buildings or develop the cure for cancer to have a gratifying career.
Reward comes in here-and-there moments. The key is being "present" for those times.

Yes, as corny as that may sound and as many times as you might have heard it, there's a lot to be said for "being here now" when it comes to life in general and career satisfaction in particular.

But most people have a tough time doing that, and it's costing them their happiness.

A well-documented study conducted by two Harvard researchers who set out to measure happiness, shows that 47 percent of the time people think about something other than what they are doing, and that mind-wandering typically makes them unhappy.

Psychologists Matthew A. Killingsworth and Daniel T. Gilbert concluded this after collecting data from more than 15,000 volunteers ages 18 to 88 from more than 80 countries in 86 different occupations.

They gathered the data through an iPhone application that tracks people's happiness, trackyourhappiness.org, asking at random intervals how happy someone was, what they were doing and whether they were thinking about their current activity or something else that was pleasant, neutral or unpleasant.

The study showed that mind-wandering occurred in all activities. When someone is working, they discovered a person's mind wanders 50 percent of the time. It makes you wonder if that's one reason so many people complain their work is not rewarding.

That tendency for the human mind to wander and think about what is not happening, is a cognitive achievement that comes with an emotional costs, say the researchers in the journal Science, adding, "A human mind is a wandering mind, and a wandering mind is an unhappy mind."

It's incredibly easy to mind-wander at work.

Just look at all the distractions. The sounds of people around you on the phone, using equipment or just walking by. If you're like many, you're trying to work on more than one thing at a time.

One of the biggest distractions are emotions. There's that frustration or anger you can't shake over yesterday's interaction with a client or co-worker. Or just worrying about something happening right in front of you.

Once, I was sitting in an audience listening to a conceptual artist from San Francisco respond to questions from his interviewer. I can't recall the question the interviewer asked, but I remember the artist's response: He just sat there and didn't say anything.

One, two, three awkward seconds passed. Then another five or so seconds of silence. At first, I thought he was stumped by the question. Or confused. Or ill. Finally he explained that he hadn't heard the question. He said he was worrying about the fact that his wife, who was in the front row of the audience and taping the interview on a hand-held camera, was going to use up the battery on the camera. "Could you repeat the question?" he asked.

The researchers found that things like worrying "seem to be incredibly destructive to happiness" and "that our mental lives are pervaded, to a remarkable degree, by the nonpresent," Killingsworth says in Harvard Science.

Even when they looked at more pleasant mind-wandering, they say it's not as good as just being focused on what you're doing.

The key, as many philosophies and religious traditions have taught for centuries, is to first notice when you're not "present" — like the conceptual artist who was worrying instead of listening to the question he was asked.

Then make a conscious decision to "be there" for the here and now.

And that can happen only one moment at a time.

Can Thoughts Affect Your Health?

Every thought that runs through your mind is responsible for everything that happens in your life and your body.

Every effect you see in your physical world has a specific cause which has its origin in your mental world. That’s why you have to be really aware and careful of what you think. Thoughts are like a tape that always plays in your mind. What you experience depends on what you play. In order to change anything in your life. you need to change the tape first.

Studies have shown that every single thought we have is ingrained into our cells and into our DNA. Over time negative thought patterns can manifest in physical illness. Because these thoughts are in our DNA any disease or illness that manifests in us can be passed on to future generations.

Changing your thought patterns to positive ones can improve your emotional, spiritual, mental and physical states.

This week Shawn Stevenson interviews researcher, mind-body medicine educator, andspeaker, Dr. Larry Berkelhammer.

Improve Metabolism With Digestive Enzymes

(BeWellBuzz) The human body is an incredibly complex network of systems where each function is interrelated to the other by signalling components. The development and maintenance of all these systems is based on intricate and precise working conditions of biological catalysts called enzymes. All human bodies are capable of producing all the enzymes they require that are vital to the smooth running of the splendid show called life.

What are enzymes?

Every simple or complex process in our body is possible because of a series of chemical reactions. These reactions are governed by enzymes which either hasten the speed of the reaction by exponential rates or make otherwise impossible reactions take place in its presence. Essentially all enzymes are made up of proteins. What is amazing about these enzymes is that even though they participate in a reaction, they remain unaltered in terms of their chemical composition while they convert biological reactants (substrates) into the required products. Because of this property, they can be reused multiple times, depending on the requirement of the product.

What are the main properties of enzymes?

As we have established, enzymes are proteins that take part in a reaction without changing their own chemical properties. Besides this, it is important to understand other properties of enzymes.

Enzymes are highly specific: An enzyme is not only function specific but substrate specific.

Enzyme catalysed reactions are reversible: They can catalyse the both the forward reactions (substrate to product) and backward reactions (product to substrate)

Enzymes are reactive: As proteins, enzymes have a temperature and pH at which they denature and lose their activity. In most cases, denaturation is an irreversible process. The functionality or the activity’ of the enzyme is greatly affected by the prevalent temperatures and pH of the reaction. Therefore, every enzyme has an optimum temperature and pH at which the activity of the enzyme is the highest. Consequently, minimum activity is also evident at a particular point of these parameters.

What are digestive enzymes?

As the name suggests, these are a set of enzymes that aid smooth digestion of food. These enzymes are strategically secreted and present in various parts of the alimentary canal. The food we eat is systematically broken down from complex to gradually simpler compounds before they are absorbed and then distributed throughout the body. Digestive enzymes are present in the mouth, stomach, pancreas and the small intestine.

There are 4 categories of digestive enzymes:

Proteolytic enzymes: Catalyse the breakdown of proteins to amino acids.
Lipolytic enzymes: Catalyse the breakdown of fatty acids and glycerol.
Amylolytic enzymes: Catalyse the breakdown starch to simple sugars.
Nucleolytic enzymes: Catalyse the breakdown of nucleic acids.

What are digestive enzyme supplements?

The digestive enzymes especially in the stomach take some time to get secreted and act on the food. Besides this, our growing sedentary life-style causes the food to remain undigested for longer than required. Digestive enzyme supplements help speed up digestion. Consuming these supplements before or after a heavy meal can be very helpful.

What kind of digestive enzyme supplements are good for us?

There are several types of digestive enzymes. However, there are some digestive enzymes that play a more obvious role in the process. Supplements are taken to break down different kinds of food. The supplement that one chooses should contain the following essential enzymes.

Papain: It is derived from papaya and extremely effective in digesting proteins and tenderising meat.
Amylase: This enzyme breaks starch into its component sugars namely glucose.
Lipase: This enzyme breaks down long chain fatty acids and consequently digesting fats.
Lactase: This works to break down dairy products.
Bromelain: This is an enzyme which is found in pineapple. It is a remarkable enzyme capable of digesting protein.

What are the main benefits of digestive enzymes?

Now, the question lingers as to why digestive enzyme supplements should even be considered taking, since our body produces all the enzymes required. One must understand that the more enzymes that the body uses for digestion is proportional to the exhaustion of the same. Therefore, in order to have a constant supply of one’s naturally secreted digestive enzymes to maintain a longer and healthier living, one must take these supplements.

The most obvious benefit is the decrease in indigestion and bloated feeling of the stomach, since lesser acid is produced in the body for digestion.
Reduction in the number of ulcers.
Relief from hiatal hernias.
Reduced food allergies.

Digestive Enzymes – Do try this at home!

To test how good your supplement is, there is a very simple experiment that you can conduct. Take two bowls of thick oatmeal. Leave one of the bowls as is and add the prescribed amount of digestive enzyme supplement in the other. After about half an hour, the oatmeal in the latter should start to look less thick and almost watery.

This shows that the oatmeal was partially digested which saves the body much energy in digestion and nutrients are absorbed much faster.

Salt Lamp Health Benefits

(BeWellBuzz) The air we breathe affects our health in many ways. Unfortunately, today’s air is more polluted than ever. You can use a salt lamp to purify the air around you and enjoy the multiple health benefits that pristine air offers.

A salt lamp is made of a mass of crystal salt. The salt used in these lamps is generally procured from the salt mines found in Himalayan regions. A chunk of crystal salt is attached to a solid and stable base made of a durable material such as wood. A hole is made at the center of the base to provide necessary space for a light source. Salt lamps come with a power cord and plug that supply electricity to the light source installed in the lamp.

A salt lamp functions in much the same way as a regular lamp — that is, both need electricity to function. However, the two have vastly different effects on the environment. A regular lamp, like other electrical appliances, disrupts the balance of the surrounding air by releasing positive ions. A salt lamp, on the other hand, purifies the air by restoring the balance of positive and negative ions.

Salt lamps come in different shapes and sizes. Some manufacturers also offer salt lamps in different colors. You can choose a salt lamp that is most appropriate for you.

The science behind salt lamps

People often ask, “Why should I buy a salt lamp when I can get a regular lamp at a cheaper price?”

The truth is that the salt lamp and regular lamp are two different products and, as such, should not be compared. The latter’s only function is to provide light whereas the former, as you will see later on in this article, offers many important health benefits.

Now that the aforementioned question is settled once and for all, let us focus our attention on the science behind salt lamps.

Air contains both positive and negative ions. When the air is impure, the level of positive ions is more, or the balance between positive and negative ions is disturbed. Electronic appliances release positive ions into the surrounding environment and are one of the many causes of air pollution. Breathing in air loaded with positive ions can cause and/or precipitate various health conditions such as respiratory disorders (asthma), allergies, migraine headaches, insomnia, and stress.

As mentioned above, salt lamps, which are enriched with negative ions, purify the air by restoring the balance of positive and negative ions. When the light source of a salt lamp is turned on, it warms the encompassing salt crystal and induces the release of negative ions into the air.

Health benefits that salt lamps offer

The salt lamp is reported to be useful in the treatment/prevention of the following conditions:

Asthma
Allergies
Insomnia
Stress
Migraine
Anxiety
Sinus

Selecting an appropriate salt lamp

While purchasing a salt lamp, it is important to pay attention to its size. If you buy a salt lamp that is too small for your room, you may not get all the purported benefits.

Given below is an estimate of the minimum size salt lamp you need for the corresponding room size:

3-5 pound salt lamp for 8×8 sq. feet
6-8 pound salt lamp for 10×10 sq. feet
10-12 pound salt lamp for 12×12 sq. feet
13-15 pound salt lamp for 14×14 sq. feet
18-20 pound salt lamp for 15×15 sq. feet
22-30 pound salt lamp for 16×16 feet
32-40 pound salt lamp for 20×20 feet
45-60 pound salt lamp for 25×25 feet

The above-listed information only denotes the minimum requirements. You can always use a bigger lamp for your room or install more than one lamp to get the maximum benefits.

Taking care of your salt lamp

A salt lamp is not a high-maintenance item. Nonetheless, it may sometimes require a little care.

Here are a few tips that will come in handy if you are using salt lamps:

Turn on the lamp if the surrounding air is excessively humid to prevent it from becoming very damp. Salt lamps, by nature, absorb moisture from the air. In the case of excessive humidity, a salt lamp may absorb a lot of moisture and become very damp. This, in turn, can affect its performance.

Use your lamp at least once in a while to prevent your salt lamp from becoming damp otherwise.

If the salt lamp is damp, remove the moisture from the salt crystal before turning the lamp on. To do this, first unplug the lamp, remove the electrical unit, and then gently rub the salt crystal with a cotton towel.

Some popular brands

The three most popular salt lamp brands are:

Solay Salt Lamp
Himalayan Salt Lamp
Rock Salt Lamp

You can buy any of these or other types of salt lamps for your room to purify the surrounding environment.

Discovery Of The 'God Particle' Now Proves The Law Of Attraction Is Real

After 50 years, scientists on July 4th 2012 have finally confirmed the existence of what's known as the 'GOD' particle....also known as the Higgs Boson particle.

In Chapter 4 of my book, I talk about the ETHER in space. Critics and some modern scientists have said that no such ether exists, which supposedly disproves the Law of Attraction and how our minds create our reality. BUT, the discovery of the Higgs Boson particle NOW confirms the existence of an invisible energy field (Higgs field) that fills the vacuum of space. Check out this ARTICLE

Article Excerpt: Theoretical physicists have long postulated that Higgs particles permeate the Universe, creating an invisible energy field that causes other particles of matter to have mass, allowing matter to coalesce into larger objects such as molecules, stars and planets.

Professor Brian Cox Broadcaster and particle physicist:

"It is the biggest scientific discovery of my lifetime and without doubt one of the biggest scientific discoveries of all time. This day will go down as one of the great days in the history of science."
------------------------------------------------------------

The scientists themselves say there is no practical application of this discovery. Nothing can be further from the truth. This discovery is basically confirming everything I teach in my book! My book's information IS THE practical application of this discovery, and the discovery proves the real science behind it. Click HERE to get a copy of the book.

What Goes Around Comes Around?

His name was Fleming, and he was a poor Scottish farmer. One day, while trying to make a living for his family, he heard a cry for help coming from a nearby bog. He dropped his tools and ran to the bog. There, mired to his waist in black muck, was a terrified boy, screaming and struggling to free himself. Farmer Fleming saved the lad from what could have been a slow and terrifying death.

The next day, a fancy carriage pulled up to the Scotsman's sparse surroundings. An elegantly dressed nobleman stepped out and introduced himself as the father of the boy Farmer Fleming had saved. 'I want to repay you,' said the nobleman. 'You saved my son's life.' 'No, I can't accept payment for what I did,' the Scottish farmer replied waving off the offer. At that moment, the farmer's own son came to the door of the family hovel. 'Is that your son?' the nobleman asked. 'Yes,' the farmer replied proudly. 'I'll make you a deal. Let me provide him with the level of education my own son will enjoy. If the lad is anything like his father, he'll no doubt grow to be a man we both will be proud of.' And that he did.

Farmer Fleming's son attended the very best schools and in time, graduated from St. Mary's Hospital Medical School in London, and went on to become known throughout the world as the noted Sir Alexander Fleming, the discoverer of Penicillin. Years afterward, the same nobleman's son who was saved from the bog was stricken with pneumonia. What saved his life this time? Penicillin. The name of the nobleman? Lord Randolph Churchill His son's name? Sir Winston Churchill

The Truth About High Blood Pressure

High blood pressure is the single most important risk factor for stroke, heart failure, kidney failure, and heart attack. It is often called the “silent killer” as there are usually no symptoms.

Stroke is the No. 3 cause of death among Americans. It’s also a leading cause of serious, long-term disability. Projections show that by 2030, an additional 27 million people could have high blood pressure, a 9.9% increase in prevalence from 2010.

Many people mistakenly think of stroke as an “old person’s disease.” But in the United States, about 76.4 million people age 20 and older have high blood pressure.

This week Shawn Stevenson explains and shares the real truth about high blood pressure, natural solutions and prevention tips. You might be shocked after listening to this podcast.
